  • Catalogue Essay

Once again displaying prowess to the fusion of materials and traditional aesthetics, Hublot launched the Big Bang Aero Bang Tungsten in 2009, being the first in the lineage of the Aero Bang model to incorporate one of the most prestigious and robust materials, Tungsten. Discovered by Carl Wilhelm Scheele in 1781, Tungsten is among one of the rarest metals with a hardness 10 times harder than 18K gold, 5 times harder than steel and 4 times harder than titanium measuring between 8-9 on the Mohs scale of hardness.

Encased in the slate gray tungsten case lies a semi-skeletonized dial with matte black outer minute track and registers creating an attractive yet conservative contrast. Limited to 999 pieces, the present example numbered 491 is accompanied by the full set of accessories and is preserved in excellent overall condition.

    Hublot

    Swiss • 1980

Hublot was founded by Carlo Crocco in 1980 and named after the French word for "porthole," which resembles their iconic bezel design. Hublot's first watch followed three years of research and was the first wristwatch to be fitted with a natural rubber strap. The brand's most recognizable watch today is the 'Big Bang', which was first launched in 2005 upon the arrival of CEO and shareholder Jean-Claude Biver. Other noteworthy models are the 'Classic Fusion' and 'King Power'.
