Catalogue Essay
- The Hublot Classic Fusion Murakami—a limited edition collaboration with the celebrated Japanese contemporary artist known for his "superflat" aesthetic—reinterprets the artist’s iconic “smiling flower” not with color, but through motion, texture, and light. This time-only watch animates Murakami’s emblem with free-spinning, diamond-set petals that respond to the wearer’s gesture, bringing the motif to life with subtle, continuous movement.
- Against an all-black ceramic canvas—chosen to accentuate the sparkle of the stones and balance the watch’s substantial 45mm presence—the dial is a study in restrained spectacle. The petals, set with 456 black diamonds, are ingeniously crafted as a single disc mounted on ball bearings and weighted along one edge, allowing it to rotate freely with the motion of the wrist.
- To preserve the purity of the revolving flower, the hour and minute hands are mounted on extended pinions, their visible tips skimming just above the petals. The flower’s central disc, domed and fixed to the underside of the sapphire crystal, conceals the base of the hands, enhancing the illusion of a floating blossom. This layered architecture adds about a third to the watch’s height, yet the all-black finishing—alternating polished and brushed surfaces—maintains a cohesive, modern elegance.
- Notably, the Murakami edition elevates the Classic Fusion formula not only in artistry but also in mechanics. It is the first time-only model in the collection to house the MHUB1214 UNICO automatic movement, featuring a silicon escapement and a three-day power reserve—an upgrade from the Sellita calibers typically found in the line. Here, the Unico is presented in its purest form, stripped of its usual chronograph module, making this collaboration as technically considered as it is visually compelling.
- In marrying Murakami’s playful yet profound visual language with Hublot’s material and mechanical innovation, this timepiece numbered 157 of a limited edition of 200 pieces stands as one of the brand’s most distinctive artistic statements in recent years—a wearable sculpture that captures joy in motion.

Hublot
Swiss | 1980Hublot was founded by Carlo Crocco in 1980 and named after the French word for "porthole," which resembles their iconic bezel design. Hublot's first watch followed three years of research and was the first wristwatch to be fitted with a natural rubber strap. The brand's most recognizable watch today is the 'Big Bang', which was first launched in 2005 upon the arrival of CEO and shareholder Jean-Claude Biver. Other noteworthy models are the 'Classic Fusion' and 'King Power'.
