This artwork was created during a collaboration with the workshop team at the Singapore Tyler Print Institute in 2013. Exchanging her signature stone and marble medium for softer and more flexible paper pulp, Han Sai Por aimed to explore the motif of the forest, a theme which has occurred throughout her artistic practice. She often makes references to deforestation, destruction and extinction in her work, drawing on her experience of Singapore’s shifting landscape from rainforest island to urban land mass over the course of her lifetime. In Nestles 5, Han presents a primal forest under threat from extinction, yet it is not depicted as defeated or mournful, but as a place that still seems to pulsate with life.

Arguably one of Singapore’s most established sculptors, Han Sai Por creates works that focus on nature and the environment. Han is a formidable artistic figure, and in her 50 years of practice she has shaped her aesthetic language of understated, geometric and organic forms. She has received international acclaim for her sculptures, including being awarded the Singapore Cultural Medallion in 1995 and winning the painting and sculpture section in the 11th Triennale India in 2005. Her sculptures can be found across various locations in Singapore, and are featured prominently abroad at the Singapore offices of the World United Nations, New York and the Singaporean Embassy in Washington D.C.
