Gregory Halili’s interest in eyes began when he was commissioned by the Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York to come up with a collection for the show All That Glitters. His work stems from research on the 17th and 18th century English custom of “lover’s eye” portraits. During that era, English noblemen wanted to have paintings of their mistresses whilst keeping them a secret, and so only commissioned miniature paintings of their eye. In this artwork Halili creates a self-portrait as an islander, capturing the tiny lines and contours of his own eye on this iridescent mother-of pearl shell. The mother-of-pearl shell references the Philippines, a country made up of many islands and coastal villages in which people’s fates and fortunes are often bound to the ocean.

Halili paints small-scale, extraordinarily detailed works on unusual surfaces such as seashells. His work explores his ongoing fascinating with memory, death, and lifecycles. Born in the Philippines, he graduated from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He returned to the Philippines in 2013 after relocating to the United States for 25 years. He has presented numerous solo and group exhibitions internationally. In 2016, Halili was one of the Filipino artists who presented at the Singapore Biennale.
