Catalogue Essay
Founded in 1735, Garrard started as a silversmith and received commissions from aristocratic patrons. The firm’s first royal order placed by Prince of Wales happened within the first year of its establishment, acknowledging Garrard's exceptional skills. In 1843, Queen Victoria awarded Garrard the title of The Crown Jewellers, and they went on to serve six successive monarchs. Garrard was responsible for significant numbers of important royal commissions, including the re-cutting of Koh-i-Noor diamond, and the creation of the Imperial State Crown.
