Good to Know:
- Chronomètre à Resonance featuring two independent time zones, twin seconds and power reserve
- Presented in a titanium case with a ruthenium-coated dial, rose gold hands and crowns
- Made to celebrate the second anniversary of the F.P. Journe Tokyo Boutique
- Limited to 12 examples, the present watch being number 2
The Chronomètre à Résonance is one of the watches most closely associated with François-Paul Journe. Inspired by the work of eighteenth-century watchmaker Antide Janvier, it brought the principle of resonance to a wristwatch, something that had long been considered almost impossible to achieve.
Rather than relying on a single balance, the Chronomètre à Résonance uses two oscillators positioned close enough to interact through the phenomenon of resonance. Once synchronized, they naturally influence one another, helping to stabilize their rate while also allowing the watch to display two independent time zones.
Turning the watch over reveals the manually wound calibre 1499.2, crafted in rose gold. Its beautifully symmetrical layout is characteristic of F.P. Journe, with the twin balances immediately drawing the eye through the sapphire caseback. Beyond its visual appeal, the movement reflects the manufacture's commitment to combining technical ingenuity with exceptional traditional finishing.
The present watch was sold in 2007 to mark the second anniversary of the F.P. Journe Tokyo Boutique. Limited to just 12 examples, it stands apart with its titanium case, ruthenium-coated dial and contrasting rose gold hands and crowns, a combination found only on this anniversary series.
Numbered 2 of the edition, it is one of the rarest versions of the Chronomètre à Résonance and a wonderful example of François-Paul Journe's ability to combine technical innovation with a distinctive sense of design. To the best of our knowledge, this is the second of this limited edition piece to come at auction.

F.P. Journe
Swiss | 1999Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.
Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
