  • Catalogue Essay

Succeeding the Octa Calendrier, F.P. Journe’s inaugural automatic annual calendar wristwatch, the Quantième Perpétuel was launched in 2012, dressed in pink gold or platinum. Like today’s Journe offerings, this model has only ever been delivered in the larger 40mm or 42mm cases.

Borrowing from the Octa Divine, this perpetual calendar wristwatch is outlined by a quatrefoil formation. In favour of the signature asymmetrical display, Journe separates the date, day, month and power reserve into four quadrants, with the leap year subtly indicated around the center post, via a stud index underneath the hour and minute hands. Unlike most perpetual calendars on the market, the Octa Quantième Perpétuel is comparatively easier on the eyes and is operationally foolproof.

In correspondence with all watches in the Octa family, the movement is based on the in-house cal. 1300.3 with 120 hours of power reserve, meticulously designed by the watchmaker to ensure that the case size remains consistent. Spoken like a true F.P. Journe creation, the feature that best illustrates his mechanical prowess is the simultaneous, instantaneous jumping of all calendar indications when midnight strikes. Not to mention, the date, day and month can also be manipulated in unison without the use of a setting pin. Simple and intuitive, this perpetual machine is pure genius.

Tastefully executed, both inside and out, this timepiece bears a hefty wrist presence thanks to its staggering 42mm platinum case and its solid 18K pink gold movement within. The white gold dial is beautifully finished with a frosted effect, complemented with radial Arabic numerals and blued steel hands, also another signature of F.P. Journe.

Numbered 19, the present Octa Quantième Perpétuel is delivered in excellent overall condition and will no doubt please the discerning collectors of ingenious mechanical marvels. The pink gold iteration of this model is also available in this auction. Please refer to Lot 8006 for a side-by-side comparison of the two configurations.

  • Artist Biography

    F.P. Journe

    Swiss • 1999

Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
