  • Catalogue Essay

The Octa Quantième Perpétuel was launched in 2012 as the heir apparent to the Octa Calendrier, F.P. Journe’s first automatic annual calendar wristwatch. Delivered in both platinum and pink gold, the model is offered in two case size variants, measuring at 40mm and 42mm.

Adhering to the brand’s DNA, the design of the Quantième Perpétuel adopts familiar features from the Octa Divine, such as its quatrefoil layout. Journe steered away from his signature offset dial, dividing it into four even quadrants, where the day and month apertures are aligned at 12 o’clock, counterbalanced by the two outsized date windows at 6 o’clock, along with a power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock. The leap year indication is hidden in plain sight and is signified by its stud index around the center post, behind the hour and minute hands. Standing out from the crowd of perpetual calendars on the market, the Octa Quantième Perpétuel is one of the first of generations to feature a clean and legible central dial.

Framed in a 42mm pink gold case, the present example features a highly polished rounded bezel, downturned lugs and an oversized flat crown with a raised rope-like grip. The calendar functions can be easily operated using the crown apart from the month and leap year indication, which is corrected via a pusher tucked away behind the lug at 1 o’clock.

Ingenious and absolutely foolproof, the mechanism allows for the simultaneous adjustments of the day and date in one direction, while isolating the rotation of the day in the opposite direction once the second position of the winding stem is in place. The automatic cal. 1300.3 is also designed to enable all calendar displays to jump unilaterally, in a flash, at midnight. Made entirely of solid 18K pink gold, the movement is as beautifully finished as its exterior, bearing the Côtes de Genève stripes and a combination of other hand-executed embellishments.

Offered in excellent overall condition with its original accessories, the present Octa Quantième Perpétuel is a timeless creation that fuses form and function, and is no doubt, a quintessential F.P. Journe design. The platinum version of this model is also presented in this auction. Please refer to Lot 8009 for a side-by-side comparison of the two configurations.

  • Artist Biography

    F.P. Journe

    Swiss • 1999

Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
