  • Catalogue Essay

The cover of the December 23, 1974 issue of TIME magazine in Europe featured a photograph of avant-garde fashion designer Pierre Cardin wearing nothing but a bath towel and socks, surrounded by Cardin’s own “Pierca” chair and the present model “Narciso” mirror. This promotional photograph has caused confusion regarding the attribution of the present lot, which was manufactured by the northern Italian-based firm Acerbis and, in fact, designed by Claudio Platania. In the early 1970s, Cardin partnered with Acerbis—a 153-year-old company that, during this period, collaborated with designers such as Massimo and Lella Vignelli, Vico Magistretti, and Nanda Vigo, among others—on a line of furnishing which were advertised as “Linea Pierre Cardin.” The eponymous line, however, included works that were conceptualized by other designers including Platania and Alfredo Pizzo Greco. The mirror’s title is a playful allusion to Narcissus, a beautiful youth in Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection. From 1970 to 1985, Acerbis manufactured this model and in 1990, the model was re-editioned by Morphos, a division of Acerbis, for two years.
