Chua Soo Bin created this self-portrait in 1972, at the beginning of his career, as a way to promote his services as a photographer. The photograph simultaneously served as an advertisement for his newly opened photography studio on Oxley Road, and as a work of art. Chua poses with the tools of his trade, a vintage camera in his hands, while he looks into the camera with a direct and captivating gaze.

Singaporean photographer Chua Soo Bin has packed several careers into one lifetime. He is renowned as a photographer, art director, art dealer and patron, with his deep relationship with art tying together these different facets of his life. Starting out as a photographer in the 1950s, he quickly garnered international acclaim for his photographic series Legends, in which he captured portraits of the fourteen Chinese ink masters of the 20th century. His iconic photography permitted people a rare glimpse into the private lives of prominent artists such as Wu Guanzhong. In 2019, National Gallery Singapore Gallery presented a retrospective show of his work, which marked the first photography-centric exhibition at the Gallery.
