Choi Keeryong (b. 1976 South Korea) completed his practice-led PHD research in 2015 at the Edinburgh College of Art, The University of Edinburgh and is currently a professor on the ECA Master’s Glass programme. His research interest lies in the notion of invented cultural authenticity, historical and symbolic meanings constructed around craft materials, how they are appreciated and how they provoke an aesthetic emotion. Central to his artistic practice is the notion of "unhomeliness". This has been explored by creating a glass object that possesses "strangeness" as he could not find a sense of belonging within the existing (Korean or British) visual culture. His aim is to come closer to an understanding of the representation and consumption of an object and the ways that taste and value contribute to our understanding of the world by examining an individual’s cultural interpretation of the glass objects he creates.

"Dam Dah 9" is a labour of love artwork that took over four months to complete and an exemplary piece from an artist using new technologies combined with highly skilled craftsmanship. First designed using digital technologies and a former made with 3D printing process for making the wax model used for glass casting. The casting process itself in the refractory mould took nearly a month due to the challenges in form and thickness. Subsequently the artist worked by hand polishing for another month. The inlaying with 23.5ct gold foil of the surface bubbles took yet another month using finely cut gold foil pressed into the bubbles individually with a especially designed needled. "Dam Dah 9" is a unique artwork that was first shown at Collect 2020 at Somerset House.
