The Odd One Out is part of Chan Kar Wai’s series Cupid Rhapsody: Way back into love, which explored the prevailing sense of listlessness and dissatisfaction in society in the aftermath of the COVID-19 pandemic. Focusing on the figure of Cupid, an eternal envoy of love in the innocent form of a child, Chan hopes to remind viewers of the joy of living in The Odd One Out. Situated in a jungle setting, The Odd One Out combines the ancient form of Cupid with forms of nature in the tropics to convey timelessness and beauty. The artist also introduced playful and deliberately out-of-place elements to this piece: Cupid poses with a cocktail glass filled with coconut water and places Mediterranean grapes in a tropical fruit bowl.

Primarily working in oil paint and installation, Chan is a self-taught artist who understands painting as a means for artists to “express their hidden desires, feelings and expressions.” Based in Malaysia, she has garnered international recognition, having been commissioned by celebrities such as Gordon Ramsay and JJ Lin, and brands such as McLaren.
