Drawing inspiration from his everyday life, Casey Tan reflects on fish, a staple in Asian cuisine, with Mackerels in A Basket. Once abundant in our waters, the local fish population has declined from overfishing over the years. In this piece, Tan invites viewers to reflect on whether these species and their habitats have been taken for granted despite the vital role they play in regional cuisine.

Tan’s artworks are rich with visual metaphors. He aims to reinterpret mundane experiences in his practice, often introducing elements of drama and fantasy into the ordinary scenes and narratives. He earned a Diploma in Fine Arts from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 2020, and was the recipient of the UOB Most Promising Artist of The Year award 2019. He lives and works in Singapore and has exhibited works at the Cuturi Gallery, Singapore, ART SG and Asia NOW. His works have also been commissioned by Keppel and Temasek Holdings, among other corporations.
