A master of oil painting, Bui Van Hoan is known for his ability to depict light. In this landscape painting, the serene light from the hazy sky is reflected in the calm surface of the river. Like the solitary figure in the scene, we feel enveloped in the tranquil atmosphere created by slight variations of hue and texture. The sense of peace created in this painting reflects the artist’s wider approach to life, which is guided by Thiền Buddhism, a Vietnamese school of Zen Buddhism. Whilst at first glance the viewer encounters monochromatic simplicity, further layers and details slowly reveal themselves to the wandering eye, leading the gaze deeper into the natural landscape.

Born in Hải Dương in 1971, Hoan graduated from the Hanoi College of Fine Arts in 1994. Inspired by both impressionist brushstrokes and Asian subject matter, he developed a style of painting that straddles East and West. His artworks can be found in the Vietnam Fine Art Museum’s private collection, and have also been exhibited in London, New York, Rome, Tokyo and Singapore.
