This striking pair of prints captures the porcelain artworks Bibiana Lee created for her 2019 I AM CHINA project, which explored the subject of discrimination against Chinese Indonesians. The fragmented plate is a porcelain piece titled Pieces of May 1998, which brings to light the catastrophic event of targeted violence against the Chinese community in Indonesia. The other print depicts a plate titled A Nation Divided, which investigates the schism created in a country during political elections. This seems especially relevant to the political landscape of today, where identity politics and social media are often used to intensify divisions by spreading lies and hate.

Lee is renowned for her documentation on porcelain of the history of Indonesian discrimination against ethnic Chinese from the 17th century until 2019. Inspired by personal observations, experiences and in-depth research, Lee translates these experiences into powerful visual art. Lee’s practice extends beyond porcelain, and her experimentation with different mediums has become a trademark of her work. This diversity in her practice has earned her several prestigious awards such as gaining an Honourable Mention by the Indonesian Heritage Society for the painting The Professionals II and becoming a finalist in the 2022 Erlangga Installation Competition through her use of the Augmented Reality (AR) technique.
