  • Catalogue Essay

Andy Warhol’s indelible mark on contemporary art is undeniable and unavoidable since the artist’s earliest works of the late 1950’s and 1960’s. However, by the 1980’s he was feeling the pressure from a younger generation of artists who were riding the “bull” market wave of the 1980’s. Warhol would go on to collaborate with many of them but this challenge also prompted the artist to find a new creative energy in his final decade. Throughout his career, Warhol played with the idea of the positive and negative image and Stress! of 1985-86 wonderfully encapsulates his playful attitude towards inverted imagery. Indeed, the very process by which this work was created, and one of the most characteristic components of his oeuvre, silk screen painting, relies on the interplay between the positive (printed) image and the negative (screened) image. In these later years, Warhol reached back to his early works and simplified his process back to the basic black and white image culled from popular culture and advertisements. As such, Stress!, 1985-86, is a superb illustration of the artist’s practice and a testament to his enduring legacy and development from the first screens of the 1960’s through to the present example.

  • Artist Biography

    Andy Warhol

    American • 1928 - 1987

Andy Warhol was the leading exponent of the Pop Art movement in the U.S. in the 1960s. Following an early career as a commercial illustrator, Warhol achieved fame with his revolutionary series of silkscreened prints and paintings of familiar objects, such as Campbell's soup tins, and celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe. Obsessed with popular culture, celebrity and advertising, Warhol created his slick, seemingly mass-produced images of everyday subject matter from his famed Factory studio in New York City. His use of mechanical methods of reproduction, notably the commercial technique of silk screening, wholly revolutionized art-making.

Working as an artist, but also director and producer, Warhol produced a number of avant-garde films in addition to managing the experimental rock band The Velvet Underground and founding Interview magazine. A central figure in the New York art scene until his untimely death in 1987, Warhol was notably also a mentor to such artists as Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat.
