  • 'While there have been some crucial and incredibly important female artists in the canon of Western art history, women have largely been the subjects and rarely the makers. I am drawn to art history so I can re-present it. I would like to tell a different story, one from a female point of view. The woman on display is proud while vulnerable, imperfect yet real. She intimidates rather than seduces. I want these figures to be empowered and autonomous.'  —Allison Zuckerman

This painting, Tea Time, is exemplary of Allison Zuckerman’s mastery of fusing images from Art History with contemporary internet culture.

Made specifically for Whitechapel Gallery, the work takes as its starting point the 16th Century painting Saint Mary Magdalene by Ambrosius Benson. In a method similar to sampling, Zuckerman riffs off the original, deconstructing and rebuilding the composition through replicating specific elements such as the central chalice along with other borrowed imagery from August Macke, Vincent Van Gogh, Henri Matisse, Pablo Picasso and Willem De Kooning along with the every-day imagery of emojis, pixilation and 1990s computer-generated line drawing.  Utilising both paint and digitally manipulated images, Tea Time also incorporated crystal rhinestones to simultaneously reference the benday dots of Pop Art and the humour of social media filters.

Allison Zuckerman is one of the most exciting figurative painters today. Working at the intersection of paint and digitally technologies, her paintings brim with colour, complexity and social critique.   After receiving her MFA from School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Zuckerman attracted the interest of Don and Mera Rubell, who offered her a residency at their Miami museum. Zuckerman has presented work in galleries across the globe and has exhibited her work in solo museum shows at The Akron Art Museum, The Herzliya Museum of Contemporary Art, The University of Florida in Gainesville, and the Rubell Museum. Some of her notable collaborations include Veuve Clicquot, TODs, Charli XCX, Elle USA, and Vogue Italia.
