  • Catalogue Essay

2019 marked the year Odysseus was released. Certainly a bold move for the conservative German brand, this was an overdue concept that was biding its time for its launch. A momentous milestone for the firm, the stainless steel Odysseus was their inaugural onslaught in luxury sports watches, boasting a brilliant blue dial, before the second variant was created the following year encased in white gold.

Fitted with a matching rubber strap, the present wristwatch features a sporty grey dial that reveals fifty shades of grey as it plays with light under different angles. Chiselled and charming, the dial is further adorned with a stellate embossing on its minute track and sub-register, finished to the highest degree in Lange’s distinct design code. Tastefully crafted both inside and out, the sapphire case back invites its wearer to appreciate the hand-polished cal. L155.1, which is as technically sound as it is a sight of beauty.

With the ever-growing demand for the brand and this reference, the chance to acquire an Odysseus is getting slimmer as the boutiques’ wish-list grows longer. Offered in excellent overall condition with its original accessories, this is the perfect opportunity to collect the highly sought-after timepiece, made for the modern gentry.

  • Artist Biography

    A. Lange & Söhne

    German • 1845

Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.

On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
