  • Catalogue Essay

Since the firm’s re-establishment in 1990 by great grandson of the original founder, Walter Lange, the Saxon-based firm has produced some of the most impressive timepieces of modern day horology propelling the brand to new heights. With an emphasis in preserving traditional watchmaking craft, A. Lange & Söhne timepieces are executed to extreme high quality garnering a global group of devoted collectors over the years.

In 2013, the firm released the 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar and was one of their finest and most complicated timepieces made featuring a manually-wound movement comprised of 631 individual parts with hand-finished and hand-engraved bridges and plates. While the regular examples of the model encased in platinum and pink gold are extremely impressive timepieces, A. Lange & Söhne released a limited edition in white gold with only 20 examples in 2017. While its complications and movement remains the same as its regular counterparts, the limited edition timepiece belongs to the coveted and rare Handwerkskunst series. Meaning “artisanship” in German, timepieces from the series are decorated with a hint of flare displaying the firm’s artistic craftsmanship on their exclusive timepieces.

The 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst is an absolutely jaw-dropping example. Featuring a blue translucent enamel dial, it is further decorated with small white gold stars underneath the enameled surface as a continuation of the firm’s signature moon phase. When one turns the timepiece onto its back, a hinged caseback is presented with an engraved decoration topped with a blue translucent enamel surface while the center of the cuvette is engraved with a portrait of “Luna” the Roman Goddess holding a torch depicting the moon’s light. Once opened, it reveals the sophisticated metropolis of the cal. L101.1 under the sapphire display caseback, allowing the wearer to admire the hand-finished and decorated movement bridges and plates displaying the stars of the universe.

Extremely rare and attractive, the present fresh-to-the-market example numbered 5 A. Lange & Söhne 1815 Rattrapante Perpetual Calendar Handwerkskunst is the first example to be offered at a PHILLIPS Auction and is also consigned by the original owner preserved in excellent overall condition and complete with its full set of accessories.

  • Artist Biography

    A. Lange & Söhne

    German • 1845

Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.

On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
