  • Catalogue Essay

Launched in 2009, the Zeitwerk collection famously pays homage to the Dresden Semper Opera house with 5 minutes digital display clock. Disruptive with its unconventional design, the Zeitwerk is powered by a constant force mechanism (remontoire d’egalite) enabling and uniform flow of energy to power the jumping hour and minute discs of the brand’s signature time bridge display. Extremely easy to operate by the push of a button, the game changing Zeitwerk caught the attention of aficionados.

Ten years since its launch, A. Lange & Söhne unveiled another ground-breaking variant of the lineage, the Zeitwerk Date. The 18K white gold model welcomes an additional ring-shaped date display that encircles around the subtlety of soft grey dial made out of solid silver and the gleaming rhodium time bridge.

Redesigned with a new and improved architecture, the manual wind caliber L043.8 enables quick adjustment with the date corrector at 8 o’clock. To enable the correction to work independently of the switching cycles of the movement, a clutch uncouples the hour ring from the jumping numerals mechanism each time the button is pressed. The switching impulse is generated when the button is released.

Offered in an absolute unworn condition with its original protective sticker still intact. The present Zeitwerk date with all its original accessories is absolutely a stunning example of contemporary time keeping.

  • Artist Biography

    A. Lange & Söhne

    German • 1845

Originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange in Glashütte, Dresden, Germany, the firm established an entire watchmaking culture and industry in Glashütte. The brand quickly became Germany's finest watchmaker, first creating dependable, easy-to-repair watches before going on to produce some of the world's finest complicated pocket watches, including Grande Sonnerie watches, tourbillon watches and Grande Complications.

On the final day of World War II, their factories were destroyed by Russian bombers, and in 1948 the brand was confiscated by the Soviet Union. Following the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, Ferdinand's great grandson Walter Lange re-established the brand with the objective to once again produce top-quality luxury watches. Now part of the Richemont Group, its original vintage and modern creations are highly coveted by collectors. Key models from the modern era include the Lange 1, Pour Le Mérite Tourbillon and the Zeitwerk.
