Originally started in 1872, the Brazilian retailer was at one time responsible for a third of Patek Philippe’s production, with the relationship solidifying in 1902 when Patek Philippe registered the model Chronometro Gondolo. For approximately the next 25 years, the Gondolo name was associated with high quality pocket watches and later wristwatches made specifically for the retailer. The watches featured several technical attributes, which set them apart from other Patek Philippe pocket watches including:

    • stem-wound movement, ratchet wheels of the mainspring barrel arbor with wolf tooth winding and a square indentation for the release of the barrel spring
    • 9K gold wheel train
    • straight line moustache lever escapement with a bimetallic compensation balance and a Breguet balance spring
    • minimum of 18 jewels
    • cam wheel or snail cam regulator, allowing for very precise but practical adjustment of the watch

The dials reflected a range of styles from those with Roman, Arabic and Breguet numerals to the more unusual, however they all featured the Chronometro Gondolo signature, which originally appeared at the top of the enamel dial over the Patek Philippe signature, but was later moved to an arched signature over the subsidiary seconds.

The present watch is a fine example of the rare 24-hour dials found on these famed watches. Patek Philippe created two distinct styles, one with full 24-hour indication and the second with 23-hour indication and a red or black “0” at the 12 position. These watches ran twice as slow as a typical movement so the day and night were shown over a 24-hour period. In excellent original condition, this pocket watch with black and red Breguet 24-hour dial makes a fine addition to any collection. It provides collectors with an opportunity to be part of a historical membership that is now over 100 years old.
