  • Catalogue Essay

Jade carvings by Chinese artisans have long been celebrated as a highly specialized artform. Auspicious symbols representing luck, prosperity, longevity and virtue have been incorporated into jadeite carving designs since antiquity. The carving incorporates both squirrels and grapes. Squirrels, called ‘songshu’ (松鼠) in Mandarin Chinese, shares the syllable tone with pine (松樹), a symbol of longevity. Whilst grapes usually contain seeds ‘zi’ (籽) signifying strong descendants. A succulent bunch of grapes also signifies an abundance of wealth, with good things to come and an improvement to one’s fortune. A historical figure who was renowned for her love of jadeite was Empress Dowager Cixi.
