Red Spinel is a variety of red gemstone that is gaining substantial popularity among collectors in recent years due to their scarcity and vibrant colour. Fine specimens of spinels were mistaken as rubies for over a thousand years because they were found in the same deposits as corundum and possess an equally alluring shade, sometimes surpassing that of ruby in brightness due to their singly refractive property. Many of the world's most magnificent spinels are mounted on important royal jewels under the same assumption. One famous example is the red spinel mounted above Cullinan II diamond in The Imperial State Crown.
