Since the establishment of the Design Trust initiative in 2014, the initiative continues to positively impact the design community in support to scholars, design researchers and practitioners. In providing fellowships with partnering overseas and local institutions, grant recipients expand their portfolios in the fields of research, skill-building or practice. In addition, Design Trust aims to actively accelerate the development of meaningful projects that advocate the positive role of design. Design disciplines can range from graphics, wearable technologies, product design, architecture to the built environment.

Grant recipients have opportunities to work on cross-disciplinary projects and exchanges as well as to showcase works at international exhibition venues, biennales or design festivals. For example, the first Feature Grant grantee MAP Office exhibited their project “Uneven Growth” at the MoMA in New York. Working closely with M+ museum and the Royal College of Art London on fellowship-programs, Design Trust continues to contribute to bodies of original knowledge relating to design and architecture in Hong Kong, the region and internationally.

The 2018 edition focused on notions of innovation, leisure and play, and demonstrated the importance of social impact of public space. The 2019 edition focused on the theme “Heritage is Innovation” and explored the role of contemporary design in culture through examining heritage, sustainability and conservation.
