  • Catalogue Essay

Accretions are hand-thrown clay made into a unique vessel, with forms suggestive of body parts and organic elements. Slowly, the vessel’s surface grow into imperfections, which begin as specks of texture, and into fragile porcelain petals. The result is a furry texture that the brothers call “a record of time and growth” specific to each piece.

The Haas Brothers, twins Nikolai and Simon (b. 1984), had a creative upbringing in Texas where they studied stone carving under their father, mastering the craft before leaving home. Early on, the brothers received accolades for their exceptional craftsmanship and expansive studio practice. In the years since, they have taken the design world by storm and evolved from fabricators and collaborators to nimble cross-pollinators in creative disciplines including fashion, film, music, art and design. In their current works, The Haas Brothers explore aesthetic and formal themes related to nature, science fiction, sexuality, psychedelia and colour theory.
