Catalogue Essay
- The quintessential chronograph of the late 60s, the Zenith El Primero chronograph over the last fifty years has evolved into a lasting symbol of chronograph design and engineering, undergoing respectful reinterpretations. Not only featuring possibly the best automatic chronograph movement of its time, it also featured one of the era's most understated, comfortable, and well-proportioned cases, coupled with a dial design that has retained a sense of freshness through its decades.
-Launched in 2021, the Chronomaster Original evoked the spirit of the original 1969 Zenith A386, yet incorporated enhancements to ensure a blend of modernity and exquisite craftsmanship. Preserving the iconic silhouette of the original El Primero while exuding a contemporary and luxurious feel, The present Zenith Chronomaster Original Limited Edition for Hodinkee was released in 2022, an immediate success and part of a limited edition of 300 pieces the timepiece was virtually sold-out in seconds.
- Featuring a stunning and warm matte salmon opaline dial, the dial is further given balance with three interlocking galvanic sub-dials in harmonious tones of grey and silver. Similarly, the galvanic grey shade from the three o'clock subdial has further been used for the surrounding 10-second tachymeter scale, whilst a corresponding salmon base has been used for the surrounding 1/10th of a second scale.
- Showcasing a 38mm diameter case, and visible through the sapphire caseback, sits the Zenith El Primero Automatic Caliber 3600 movement, with the caseback further engraved with a "Hodinkee" & "one of 300" mention.
- In virtually unworn condition, the present Limited Edition Zenith Chronomaster Original for Hodinkee is further accompanied by its full set of accessories.

Zenith
Swiss | 1865Since Zenith's beginnings, founder George Favre-Jacot sought to manufacture precision timepieces, realizing quality control was best maintained when production was housed under one roof. Zenith remains one of the few Swiss manufacturers to produce their own in-house movements to this day.
Today, the brand is best known for the "El Primero," the firm's most successful automatic chronograph movement. In an interesting twist of fate, the company that owned Zenith during the 1970s decided to move on to quartz movements and therefore sought to destroy the parts and tools necessary to make mechanical movements. One watchmaker realized this folly and hid the tools and parts before they were destroyed. In 1984, he returned them to Zenith so they could once again make the El Primero movement.
