The Vingt-8 has become the backbone of Voutilainen’s offering. First leaving the workshop in 2011, it houses the fully in-house Calibre 28 regulated by the double-wheel escapement that has become a trademark of the Finnish watchmaker. While great watches can dazzle. The rarest ones feel personal. This Voutilainen Vingt-8, a passion project of two friends, does both. As true friendship is rare in any walk of life, but rarer still is finding someone who shares the same intensity of passion and vision when it comes to watch collecting.
This timepiece reflects Kari Voutilainen’s deepest instinct as a watchmaker. He does not simply fulfil orders from a catalogue; he listens, interprets, and helps shape a collector’s vision into something real. When a request aligns with his sense of beauty and integrity, he will go to remarkable lengths to bring it to life. It is this genuine openness, this willingness to meet the collector halfway, that has produced so many of the most colourful and unexpected versions of his work.
Rather than simply commissioning matching pieces, the two friends approached Kari Voutilainen with an intimate request: a pair of enamel Vingt-8s in titanium, an already uncommon choice for the model. Each uniquely featuring a different hand guilloche pattern underneath the translucent blue enamel that contrast with its black outer ring. It is the dial, however, that turns this watch into something closer to a private letter. The blue and black dial has depth and stillness, the logo is replaced with Kari’s personal signature. It is rendered in silver to match the applied numerals and hands for maximum legibility. In an age of logos and limited editions, this small act of humility feels radical. It was a simple request, yet one with profound meaning. In a single stroke, the watchmaker was placed first and the brand second. Only two of such watches were made. Fresh to the market, this is the only example that has graced the market.
The dials themselves were produced at Comblémine, the dedicated dial manufactory Kari established to ensure complete control over every surface that meets the eye. Sized at 39 mm, the titanium case is light yet substantial and shaped with the maker’s distinctive teardrop lugs. Inside, the large free-sprung balance and dual direct-impulse escapement reveal both technical originality and obsessive hand finishing. Every component is designed, manufactured and finished within the atelier.
To hold this Vingt-8 is to hold a rare convergence of friendship, craft and intention. It is not merely one of the few titanium examples of the model; it is the only private commission known that placed the watchmaker at the centre of the story. For those who understand that the greatest watches are never just objects, this one speaks with unusual clarity.
