Catalogue Essay
- The Urwerk EMC (Electro Mechanical Control) is the result of research made within the U-Research Division: the brand’s experimental laboratory. This watch is the world’s first precision mechanical watch in which the precision can be both monitored and adjusted by the user.
- The EMC is Urwerk's firs timepiece with time indicated via central hands, the dial features four different indications: the precision indicator ranging from -20 to + 20 seconds per day (top left), the seconds dial (top right) hours and minutes (bottom right) and 80-hour power reserve indicator (bottom left).
- By rotating the handle on the right side of the case the precision generator is powered, then by pushing the button on the bottom left side of the case an electronic sensor will control the vibrations per hour of the balance wheel and the precision of the watch will be indicated on the relevant dial. The wearer can then adjust the precision of the watch via a screw on the caseback. The EMC is as ingenious as it is easy to use, and was awarded in 2014 with the "Best innovation" and "Mechanical Exception" awards at the prestigious Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG).
- In excellent condition, the Urwerk EMC is one of the most innovative and exciting watches from one of the forefathers of independent creative horology. The present watch is number 38 of a limited edition of 55 pieces.

Urwerk
Swiss | 1997The Swiss firm's name "Urwerk" is a play on the German word meaning clockwork. "Ur" is an ancient Sumerian city in which the populace used sundials for timekeeping, while "werk" is German for creation. The company started by Felix Baumgartner and Martin Frei is known for their innovative avant-garde designs inspired by space travel. With their own take on time indication, like many of their contemporaries, their futuristic timepieces are rooted in high-end traditional watchmaking. Their signature floating method of time indication using rotating satellites traces back to a watch made in 1656. Producing only 150 watches per year, they have impressed connoisseurs with their innovativeness and cutting-edge technical prowess.
