Urban Jürgensen’s Reference 3 was introduced in the early 1990’s as an evolution of the Reference 2. It was estimated that 100 examples were planned, although it remains unclear whether the full number was ever produced. Only a small number were cased in platinum, making the present case number 30 a particularly rare example.
The Reference 3 retained the refined and symmetrical layout of its predecessor while adding a power-reserve indication beneath the moon-phase display at 12 o’clock. Although subtle in appearance, the addition was a considerable technical achievement, requiring two years of development and being incorporated without increasing the dimensions of the watch.
The hand-guilloché dial required up to 700 separate operations and two full days of work to complete. The satin-finished outer track, Roman numerals and simple minute divisions frame the guilloché centre, while the indications for the day, date, month and moon phases are arranged symmetrically across the dial. The moon disc is made from mirror-polished blued steel, with the stars manually inlaid in gold and two polished 18-karat gold moons fitted into its surface.
The case is equally impressive. Its distinctive teardrop lugs were individually forged, heat-treated, hand-polished and soldered onto the case, with the work carried out so precisely that the soldering line is invisible to the naked eye.
Powering the watch is a superbly finished extra-thin automatic calibre fitted with a 21K yellow gold guilloché rotor. Developed during a particularly important period for Urban Jürgensen, when Derek Pratt and Kari Voutilainen were involved in the development and creation of the collections, the Reference 3 combines a refined aesthetic with considerable technical sophistication.
