Good to Know:
- Minute repeating platinum tonneau wristwatch
- A previously unknown and undocumented possibly unique piece
- Case made by JP Hagmann
Brogsitter entered the horological world in 2005, quickly gaining recognition among collectors and enthusiasts. His debut became a defining moment in independent watchmaking when Philippe Dufour presented his first prototypes at the Basel Watch Fair, describing them as something “extraordinary.”
A passionate collector rather than a trained watchmaker, Brogsitter was deeply inspired by observatory chronometers and the precision watches of the 1930s to 1950s. His collaboration with German watchmaker Karsten Frässdorf began through the servicing of his personal collection and evolved into a shared vision of creating rectangular watches with specially developed movements inspired by historical designs. They were later joined by Urs Gottscheu, who, like Frässdorf, had worked at Gübelin under Richard Daners.
Together, the trio developed their movements entirely from scratch, combining technical expertise from Frässdorf and Gottscheu with Brogsitter’s design vision. The collaboration produced two documented models, one featuring a constant-force escapement and the other a tourbillon. Only approximately a dozen of watches were completed before the three collaborators eventually went their separate ways.
Undocumented and unique to the market, the present example introduces a sublime minute repeater complication within Brogsitter’s signature design language. A true scholarship changing watch and a groundbreaking discovery, this piece was likely conceived either as an early prototype or as the foundation for a future line. This exceptional piece, encased in platinum, draws inspiration from Patek Philippe minute repeaters of the 1940s, most notably the iconic gold tonneau minute repeater delivered to Henry Graves Jr. in 1928. Bearing the surprising movement number 003, this designation is unlikely to indicate the production number of the series, as no other examples of this exceptional creation are currently known to the market. Testament to Mr. Brogsitter's no-compromise approach to the craft, the case of the present timepiece was made by the most important casemaker of the time (and possibly of all times) Mr. Jean-Pierre Hagmann, whose monogram JHP proudly features between the lugs of the watch and also on the solid caseback.
This exceptional timepiece an extraordinarily rare opportunity for collectors to acquire what may well be the most exclusive and elusive creation ever produced by Marc Brogsitter.
