The RM 014 marks Richard Mille’s innovative venture into the nautical realm, representing a significant shift from its traditional focus on Formula 1 racing. This remarkable timepiece draws inspiration from the "Maltese Falcon", a groundbreaking three-masted yacht launched in 2006 by Perini Navi in La Spezia, Italy. Designed by Ken Freivokh, the yacht features luxurious interiors that enhance its visual allure. Emulating the legacy of legendary clipper ships, the Falcon Rig utilizes rectangular-cut sails and modern materials like carbon fiber, enabling the 88-meter yacht to reach an impressive speed of 25 knots. This advancement has transformed the sailing experience, allowing a single individual to manage a large yacht without a crew—an unprecedented feat in maritime history.

Richard Mille’s fascination with the Maltese Falcon led his research and development team to the shipyard, where the extensive use of black polished steel exemplifies the high standards and labor-intensive craftsmanship typical of luxury sailing vessels. This material was employed for the first time in the construction of the barrel and tourbillon bridges of the RM 014.

Visually, while the RM 014 retains essential features from its predecessor, the RM 002-V2—which boasts a carbon nanofiber baseplate, it sets itself apart with a redesigned layout for the power-reserve and torque indicators, now conveniently positioned near the crown on the right side of the dial.

The movement was developed by none other than Audemars Piguet Renaud & Papi (APRP), a legendary movement developer that once included notable names like Bart and Tim Grönefeld, Andreas Strehler, Robert Greubel, Stephen Forsey and Christophe Claret during the 1990s, prior to Audemars Piguet’s acquisition. Continuing the legacy of these independent watchmakers after their departure from the firm, the caliber RM014 is regarded as one of APRP’s finest tourbillon movements ever created.

Unlike other models encased in precious metals, this limited-edition watch is crafted from striking blue and white Carbon TPT, appealing to Richard Mille enthusiasts. Only 7 pieces were produced for the Japanese market, with the present piece numbered “00”, likely serving as the prototype.

The function selector of the RM014 was originally labeled “C-N-L” to reflect its Italian inspiration, this edition reverted to its English designation for this exclusive Japanese release. Presented in nearly unworn condition, the watch comes with its original warranty from Richard Mille Osaka, ensuring its status as an exceptional example of horological artistry from the brand.

Established in 1999, Richard Mille's ultra-modern timepieces combine cutting-edge materials from high performance worlds such as Formula 1 racecars with high-end traditional watchmaking. The brand's revolutionary designs, technical breakthroughs and exceptional hand-finishing excite even the most discriminating collectors, and have positioned Richard Mille alongside the top makers of the modern luxury watch world.

Innovative watches, such as the RM 027 Tourbillon, which was the world’s lightest mechanical watch when introduced in 2011, have helped the brand invert the concept of the luxury watch. Key models include the RM 009 Tourbillon cased in Aluminum Silicon Carbide (AlSiC), the RM 027-02 Tourbillon made for tennis star Rafael Nadal with a case made from quartz and carbon fiber and the RM 008 split seconds chronograph.
