Catalogue Essay
- Founded by Benoît Mintiens in 2010, Ressence is a Belgium based watch brand that designs watches with an unconventional and innovative look. The watches are designed and developed in Belgium, while the production of the parts are mostly produced in Switzerland, and some from other neighbouring countries.
- Ressence debuted in Baselworld 2010 with three prototypes presented. The following year, a limited number of 50 pieces of the ZeroSeries were released in three variants. This present example is the ZeroSeries Type 1001, numbered 8 and decorated with a black aluminium dial.
- The watches from the ZeroSeries were assembled by master watchmaker Daniel Van Riet in Waterloo, Brussels. It is a watch with an unconventional design. Instead of rotating hands for timekeeping, the watch features the in-house ROCS module, which has a set of disks and rings working independently, spinning the main dial and three sub-dials to indicate hours, minutes, seconds and day and night. The movement is based on a modified ETA cal. 2824-2, providing stable running of the watch.
- The ZeroSeries is a very early production and ‘prototype’ of Ressence watches. Pre-dating the limited edition Series One, it is recognizable as an early model since the caseback is sapphire glass, transparent with customized screws. In later models, the screws are removed, or the crown is removed and replaced with a metal caseback that can be rotated to wind and set the watch.
- This is the second ZeroSeries offered at Phillips, with the prior being another variant of the series, a titanium dial Type 1002. For watch enthusiasts that would enjoy a playful watch combining the Belgium design philosophy and Swiss watchmaking precision, this ZeroSeries Type 1001 shall not be overlooked.
