In 2014, Piaget introduced the Altiplano Scrimshaw, featuring a dial made from fossilized mammoth ivory, and decorated with hand-engraved map of the eastern hemisphere.
Scrimshaw is a fine engraving technique, thus, the engraved material must be dense and smooth enough to be able to trace the lines. The Altiplano Scrimshaw uses fossilized mammoth ivory that is more than 40,000 years old as the base, instead of endangered whale body parts, giving a lovely base colour for the world map.
Piaget commissioned Richard Maier, who is one of the best artisans that master the art. Maier referenced from ancient maps and drew inspiration from them, drawing and engraving the eastern hemisphere on the watch dial. A single dial requires at least 65 hours to finish, and the slightest mistake would deem the dial useless.
This present watch, preserved in excellent condition, is numbered 21 of a limited edition of 88 pieces. It is the only one that has been auctioned since its first appearance in the auction.
Piaget
Swiss | 1874Creativity, audacity and know-how are the values that gave Piaget its international reputation and allowed the brand to distinguish itself in the world of fine watchmaking and precision. Founder Georges Edouard Piaget established the company in 1874 and manufactured watch movements. While Piaget is famously recognized today for their elaborate wristwatch and bangle designs, they also mastered the marriage of their high-quality, in-house-produced wristwatches and stunning pieces of jewelry.
Collectors consider the 1970s as Piaget's era of superb creativity and unbounded designs. During this highly creative period, the brand designed an impressive range of cuff and bracelet watches carved in gold and adorned with exotic hard stones. Admired by most as not only jewelry but also true works of art, the firm's hard stone dial watches remain the most iconic, recognizable and desirable among collectors.
