Widely recognized as the master of chiming wristwatches, Patek Philippe has elevated the minute repeater to the pinnacle of horological art, fine-tuning the acoustic performance of each case metal, dimension and construction. Introduced in 2005, the reference 5078 captivated purists by pairing a classic 38mm case featuring fluted stepped lugs with a pristine white “Grand Feu” enamel dial adorned with slender black Roman numerals.
At the heart of the timepiece is the ultra-thin self-winding cal. R 27 PS. Comprising 342 components and measuring just 5.05mm in thickness, the movement achieves its slim profile via an off-centered 22K gold micro-rotor. Visible through the sapphire crystal display back, the micro-rotor is recessed into the movement plate, permitting an unobstructed view of the polished steel hammers and gongs as they strike the time. The reference 5078 in platinum was eventually discontinued in 2017, succeeded by white gold iterations featuring cream enamel dials and Breguet numerals.
Offered directly by its original owner, the present reference 5078P-001 from circa 2006 is preserved in hardly ever worn condition. Fewer than 20 examples of the 5078P-001 are known to have appeared publicly at international auctions, making this an extraordinary opportunity to acquire one of Patek Philippe's most refined modern chiming signatures. The lot is accompanied by its full set of accessories.
