Full-Cataloguing
• Special order dial/case combination for the 5970
• 2nd example ever at auction
• Fresh-to-market, full-set, and excellent condition
As the first Patek Philippe watch to be developed by current Patek Philippe president Thierry Stern and co-designed by his father Philippe, the 5970 in 18 karat pink gold, like the present example, was introduced alongside an 18 karat white gold edition as the inaugural variants of this revered reference in 2004. The reference 5970 was the final Patek Philippe perpetual calendar chronograph to utilize a Lemania 2310-based ébauche.
The 5970 has a similar design and dial configuration compared to its famous predecessors, with day and month indicated via apertures, and the date and moon-phase display both positioned at six o’clock. The 5970 was eventually discontinued in favor of the current-generation ref. 5270, which uses Patek Philippe’s first in-house chronograph movement. Since its discontinuation, the popularity and collectability of the 5970 has only increased.
During the production period of the 5970, a handful of unique pieces and special commissions were created for Patek Philippe’s best clients. These rare examples are even more sought-after than the already popular standard 5970s. One of them, like the present watch, appears at public auction for only the second time ever, and is the second known example in this configuration with the -019 dial code. We can therefore deduce that the combination of 18K pink gold 5970 fitted with a black dial and applied pink gold indexes was only available upon special request and granted to the most exclusive of Patek Philippe’s clientele.
Originally sold in 2015, the present watch remains in stunning, hardly-worn condition. It comes with all its original accessories, including a glossy oversized image and folio, as well as its solid caseback and setting pin. As only the second 5970R-019 to ever be offered publicly, and with total production numbers unknown, this is a fleeting opportunity to add one of the most exclusive timepieces produced by the hallowed Swiss brand to one’s collection.
