The Patek Philippe reference 5004 has become one of the greatest neo-vintage collectibles. Featuring a split-seconds chronograph function that allows simultaneous timing, it was the first serially produced Patek Philippe perpetual calendar model to feature such a complication. A feast of technical mastery, the intricacy of the split-seconds module added to the already complex perpetual calendar chronograph was so complicated to manufacture that only a small number of watches were delivered each year. Powered by the Nouvelle Lemania-based calibre, which can be admired through the crystal caseback, the reference was produced in a variety of metals (pink gold, yellow gold, white gold, platinum, and stainless steel) during a 16-year run, from 1994 till 2010.
Not too small nor too large, the watch measures an elegant 36 mm in diameter and shares the aesthetics of the long lineage of perpetual calendar chronographs such as the reference 3970 and the iconic references 2499 and 1518. Yet, its stepped case is slightly thicker and larger than its predecessors to accommodate the split-seconds complication, giving the watch a contemporary presence on the wrist. Displaying an oversized crown at 3 o’clock and an understated silver dial with applied Arabic numerals, the present platinum example exudes a potent mix of simplicity, modern aesthetics, and tradition.
