Catalogue Essay
Introduced in 1961, the ref. 3445 holds a special place in Patek Philippe’s history as the firm’s first serially‑produced self‑winding wristwatch with a date function. Valued by collectors for its harmonious proportions, clean case design, and practical wearability, the model is equally at home tucked under a cuff in the boardroom or worn casually on the weekend.
Produced until 1981 across three distinct series and in all four precious metals, the reference enjoyed two decades of quiet success. The first and second series preserved the original design with only minor refinements, while the third series introduced notable upgrades: a higher bezel, a sapphire crystal, and a display back.
The present watch, a yellow gold ref. 3445 from 1963, belongs to the first series, identifiable by its movement number in the 1.12 million range. Preserved in excellent overall condition, with a desirable sharply defined case and crisp hallmarks, it is further accompanied by a Patek Philippe Extract from the Archives confirming its date of production. A classic and refined example of one of Patek Philippe’s most important mid‑century references.

Patek's complicated vintage watches hold the highest number of world records for results achieved at auction compared with any other brand. For collectors, key models include the reference 1518, the world's first serially produced perpetual calendar chronograph, and its successor, the reference 2499. Other famous models include perpetual calendars such as the ref. 1526, ref. 3448 and 3450, chronographs such as the reference 130, 530 and 1463, as well as reference 1436 and 1563 split seconds chronographs. Patek is also well-known for their classically styled, time-only "Calatrava" dress watches, and the "Nautilus," an iconic luxury sports watch first introduced in 1976 as the reference 3700 that is still in production today.
