Catalogue Essay
Rarely has a timepiece been something and its opposite, yet the present pink gold Nautilus reference 5711 manages to be both flamboyant and classically restrained. It is intriguing and impressive how Patek Philippe, with the launch of the model, has succeeded in achieving a balance between opulence, technicality and elegance.
The Patek Philippe Nautilus doesn’t need an introduction - the Genta designed icon has become one of the world’s most coveted and recognizable timepieces with its porthole inspired case and integrated bracelet. Launched in 2006 in celebration of the Nautilus’s 30th anniversary, reference 5711 paid tribute to its forefather, the original reference 3700, keeping the original case design but with the addition of a central seconds hand.
The 5711 was powered by an in-house self-winding movement, the robust caliber 324 SC, which permitted a center seconds indication for the first time. A higher-grade of steel was used for improved corrosion resistance, and the bracelet was upgraded and refined, with the center links slightly flattened and the buckle now triple folding.
Launched at Baselworld in 2015, the reference 5711/1R was the first Nautilus to be cased in pink gold with bracelet. The dial, a rich “chocolate” brown, was also a first for the reference, and has remained a popular pairing for Patek Philippe, with models from the Aquanaut to the Grand Complication reference 6002 receiving this color combination.
Dating to 2020, the watch impresses not only by its sheer heft but its superlative almost unworn condition and set of accessories.
