The present timepiece is a Radiomir Independent PAM00080, numbered 47 of a 160-piece limited edition from 2001. While it retains the oversized luminous numerals, classic cushion-form and wire lugs, it is housed in a petite-for-Panerai 42mm case rather than the standard 47mm, and made entirely in 18K white gold, instead of utilitarian materials like stainless steel or titanium. Unlike the typical black or white dials used for military precision, the sharp metallic blue dial on this watch is another feature that sets it apart from other Panerai examples.
Closed with a sapphire caseback with an integrated cyclops magnifying the central pinion, the wearer is invited to admire the rare reworked Chézard cal.7400 jumping seconds mechanism that beats within. Created around the 1950s, very few modern timepieces incorporate this mechanism, which was historically used in precision instruments required for navigation or other industrial means. As opposed to “sweeping seconds”, where the hand moves fluidly from one second to another, the PAM00080 is fitted with deadbeat seconds that tick frame by frame like motion pictures, powered by a start-and-flirt mechanism. In lieu of the second hand flowing in parallel to energy transferred from the escapement each time it oscillates, the jump seconds rely on the energy retained amid its pause between each second and discharge it immediately.
Offered in excellent overall condition with its original certificate and accessories, the current Radiomir Independent PAM00080 is a well-executed phenomenon that combines the mechanical prowess and majestic proportions of this historical brand. Manufactured in a sparingly small quantity, these Panerai models rarely appear at auction, making the present opportunity to own one as scarce as the watch itself.
Known for its robust designs and large case sizes, Officine Panerai was established in 1860 by Giovanni Panerai in Florence, Italy. Around 1900, Giovanni's grandson Guido Panerai took over, and Panerai became the supplier to the Regia Marina — the Royal Italian Navy. After supplying the navy with high-precision instruments for a number of years, Officine Panerai created Radiomir, a radium-based powder that gives luminosity to the dials of sighting instruments and devices. By 1936, the Royal Italian Navy approached Panerai again with the request to design a watch resistant to extreme underwater conditions. The watch they created became known as the "Radiomir".
Panerai's watches made during the early twentieth century era were comprised of cases designed and manufactured by Rolex SA, with Cortébert, a Swiss manufacturer, supplying the majority of their movements. The most recognizable designs from the firm are the Radiomir and Luminor. To date, vintage models from the first half of the 1900s, such as the reference 3646 and 6152 models, remain the most desirable among collectors.
