Catalogue Essay
The Breguet Type 20 was one of the most important chronograph wristwatches hailing from the mid-20th century decorated with a prolific history heavily tied with aviation and the military. Since its initial launch, the Type 20 continues to be a flagship model of Breguet.

In 1994, Breguet launched their very first Type XX model as the first true modern iteration of the great chronograph referenced 3800 Aéronavale. Launched just before Breguet’s acquisition by the Swatch Group, the ref. 3800 features much of the same aesthetics as seen in its ancestral examples. Powered by a self-winding cal. 582 with a Lemania cal. 1350 base featuring an additional flyback function, the case retains its iconic design with a comfortable 39mm diameter in size to cater towards contemporary demands. Launched with a total of 3 generations, examples from the first generation featured a “gold-tipped” crown.

The present example Breguet Type XX ref. 3800 Aéronavale belongs to an example from the first generation. Presented in attractive overall condition, the present lot is accompanied by its full set of accessories.

Breguet

Swiss | 1775
Established in 1775 by Abraham Louis Breguet, widely considered the greatest watchmaker of all time, the storied brand continues to thrive in the modern era, creating exceptional high-end watches as the Swatch Group's premier prestige brand. Some of the most important and lasting inventions in watchmaking are attributed to Abraham Louis Breguet, including the tourbillon, shock resistance and the use of hammers and gongs employed in nearly all minute repeating watches made since.

Eighteenth and nineteenth century Breguet pocketwatches are especially sought-after by collectors, and many of them were made for the elite of European society, including Napoléon and Marie Antoinette. Key wristwatches from the twentieth century include oversized dress watches, two-register chronographs, triple calendars and Type XX aviator's chronographs made for the French military and civilians.
