- In 2005, Jaeger-LeCoultre honored Emmanuel Coindre’s epic solo crossing of the Pacific’s treacherous Northern Passage with a limited edition Master Compressor Extreme World Chronograph. Just 30 would be made: 20 in steel and titanium (present example), 10 in platinum and titanium, their casebacks engraved with the 11,000-kilometer route from Choshi, Japan to San Francisco. A black strap with yellow stitching evoked the colors of Coindre’s rowboat; the world-time disc featured Choshi in yellow replacing Tokyo and San Francisco in yellow replacing Los Angeles—nods to his starting and endpoints.
- For 129 days, 17 hours and 22 minutes, the 32-year-old Coindre braved fog, typhoons, countercurrents and capsizes alone in his rowboat, without stops or assistance. His sole companion: a Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Compressor Extreme World Chronograph, indicating each time zone traversed and minutes of his valiant quest. Against odds cruel and manifold, Coindre became the first to conquer the Northern Passage single-handedly through sheer will, endurance and the watch that kept his dream of victory alive.

Founded in 1833 by Antoine LeCoultre and originally named LeCoutre, the firm provided watchmaking's top brands, such as Patek Philippe, Vacheron Constantin and Audemars Piguet, the high-grade, unfinished mechanical movements with which they completed their watches.
In the early 1900s, Cartier's watch supplier Edmond Jaeger sought out LeCoultre's help in creating the world's thinnest watches. The collaboration resulted in the creation of Cartier's earliest Tank and Santos watches, all housed with LeCoultre movements. The duo decided to merge in 1937, and the firm officially became the Jaeger-LeCoultre brand by which collectors know and adore it today. Some of the firm's most significant and important timepieces include the Reverso, the Memovox, the Atmos clock and, among modern watches, their Master Complications.
