  • Catalogue Essay

-The IWC Tribute to Pallweber was released in 2018 as part of a limited edition of 500 pieces to celebrate the 150th Anniversary of the Schaffhausen-based brand. It is the wristwatch re-edition of the probably most iconic IWC pocket watch ever-made – the Pallweber. Developed in 1884 and based on the advancement of the Salzburg-based watchmaker Josef Pallweber, the pocket watch showed the hours and minutes via large numerals on rotating discs, a first at the time.

-With the exact same digital display, the present lot reads the time through three apertures: hours on top, minutes in the centre, and small seconds at 6 o’clock – all perfectly centred and aligned. The case is made of stainless steel and is shaped like a pocket-watch with a diameter of 45mm on which wired lugs were added. The watch is compact with a 12mm thickness, granting it a very modern presence on the wrist.

-Yet the showstopper has to be its dial. Mimicking the smooth texture of vintage enamelled pocket watches, the dial is made of rich blue lacquer with small accents rendered in white, and the result is nothing short of attractive. The contrast between the darkness of the blue and the purity of the white will offer its wearer great readability and depth.

    - Turning the watch around, one can admire the beautifully decorated movement with Côtes de Genève, blued screws and diamond polished bevels through the sapphire case back. A newly developed manual calibre with two mainspring barrels, powering the display and timekeeping separately and offering a 60-hour power reserve.

-Retaining its factory sticker on the case back, the present watch is offered in virtually unworn condition and is further accompanied by all its original accessories.
