- Named after the country of origin of the two men who originally commissioned the oversized model, the original Portugieser ref. 325 was delivered in 1939 but the watch being a 42mm timepiece with a pocket watch movement, at the time when watch sizes were preferably smaller, was not a commercial success.
- It was not until the 1990s, when the legendary IWC watchmaker Kurt Klaus saw a client wearing the original Portugieser in his atelier, that made the brand decided on picking the model as a Jubilee timepiece for their 125th anniversary in 1993. Since then, the IWC Portugieser collection has become one of the brand’s most iconic and desirable series, well-known for the precision time-keeping and oversized watchcases.
- First released in 1998, the Portugieser Chronograph ref. IW3714 is one of IWC’s most popular and prized models. The oversized case with flat wide dial, as well as the vertical subsidiary dials at 12 and 6 o’clock, give the watch a straightforward, utilitarian look to the timepiece.
- Operating on the self-winding cal. 79350, the watch is a reliable timekeeping workhorse. The movement is an upgraded version of the cal. 79240, which has been used in earlier ref. 3714 watches.
