Good To Know:
- Cased in titanium
- Inspired by Mercedes-AMG Formula One car
- Perpetual Calenadar, chronograph, digital date, month and leap year display
The IWC Ingenieur Perpetual Calendar Digital Date-Month, Reference IW379201, is an oversized, compelling complication wristwatch launched by IWC Schaffhausen in 2013 as part of the manufacture’s refreshed Ingenieur collection.
Measuring a commanding 46 mm in diameter, the oversized case is crafted from titanium, a lightweight yet exceptionally strong alloy developed for aerospace and Formula 1 car applications—marking IWC’s first use of this innovative material. The design elements draw direct inspiration from the instrument panel of a Mercedes-AMG Formula One car, featuring bold, angular numerals, exposed screws on the bezel, and protective ceramic elements on the pushers, crown, and shoulders. The black dial incorporates large digital apertures for the date and month, a leap-year indicator at 6 o’clock, and translucent sapphire glass inlays that partially reveal the underlying disc mechanisms. The extra-large apertures considerably enhance the dial’s legibility compared to a traditional perpetual calendar watch. Completing the rugged profile is a set of rubber strap with textile inlay and a buckle that’s also made of titanium.
Inside the case, the watch is powered by the in-house IWC Caliber 89802, it is an automatic movement boasting a remarkable 68-hour power reserve. The movement harnesses a flyback chronograph alongside Kurt Klaus’s crown-operated perpetual calendar. The perpetual calendar of course automatically accounts for months and leap years until 2100, with a proprietary quick-action switch that stores energy to advance the date and month displays precisely at month-end without compromising accuracy.
