Good To Know:

- Fresh to the market and debut on auction market
- One of 8 made across the two series (4 of each series)
- Early production piece, overhauled by Haldimann in 2023
In a time when certain independent watchmakers are treated like rock stars, others remain quietly under the radar, meticulously perpetuating their craft for a discerning clientele in the know. One such artisan is Beat Haldimann, based in the picturesque Swiss town of Thun, who has been making watches under his own name for more than two decades. A visit to his workshop reveals no CNC machines; he works only by hand, using the most traditional methods, and produces just a fewpieces each year.
Haldimann’s earliest creations were complications such as repeaters and tourbillons, both simple and double, some with a resonance system. His approach was as philosophical as it was horological: a watch with a central tourbillon and no hands (the H3), and even a timepiece whose darkened crystal conceals the hands entirely, keeping time without showing it (the H9). The H1 Flying Central Tourbillon was launched in 2002. Exceptional in every respect, it captured the attention of refined collectors and led to a collaboration between Haldimann and The PuristS community.
The PuristS/ PuristSPro (now succeeded by "Watchprosite.com") is a highly respected, long-running online forum and community of refined collectors who focus on horological craftsmanship, technical depth, and connoisseurship. The collaboration began in 2005 and extended into two series distinguished by red numerals. The idea of the PuristS Edition Series 2 was conceived in 2009, from the private conversation between the owner and Beat Haldimann via The PuristS/PuristSPro. This piece was delivered as the first of the Series 2. Scholarship and research indicate that a total of eight pieces were produced across the two series—four in each—for members of the community. All four examples of Series 1 have 1, 7, 8 in red, while for Series 2, the red 12 numeral design was a request by the owner and only known example with such feature known. Making its debut on the auction market and available to the public for the first time, the present “The PuristS Edition,” from Series 2, is offered by the original owner. Subtle yet elegant, it features a red 12 o’clock marker and signed off with H1 below, interestingly this feature of the H1 is a detail on earlier production pieces which would disappear in later examples. Another earlier production detail is the pair of Breguet hands where later production we see spade hands. The designated serial S2-02-828 was chosen by the owner. Kept in unpolished condition, the watch retains all of its original accessories.
At the centre of the dial is a raised, exposed escapement with a flying tourbillon in a lyre-shaped cage measuring an impressive 17.8 mm in diameter—a nod to the large escapements of historic pocket watches. The in-house, manually wound calibre H-Zen-A delivers a 38-hour power reserve from three mainspring barrels. The 39 mm platinum case, silvered dial, and hands strike a balance between understated elegance and distinctive character. The platinum case has a luxurious heft on the wrist; the silvered dial with hand-engraved numerals adds a note of contemporary energy. The hands, inspired by an 18th-century Haldimann Frères pocket watch, include a seconds indication driven by the rotation of the flying tourbillon cage.
This tourbillon is not only appearing in an auction room for the first time; it is also a creation born of shared passion and friendship—an ode to simplicity and craftsmanship from one of the most elusive independent watchmakers. With incredible demand and a long wait list, this is the opportunity to secure not only an example hailing from an early production, but one that stands out from regular production.
