Catalogue Essay
With great resemblance to the “mother of pearl” example ref. G2391 (please see next lot), the present example shares the same reference. With the only difference being the material used on the case, the hue and the nature of the material is where it varies. Differing from the white mother of pearl example, the present pocket watch featuring a tortoise shell embossed yellow gold case presents an attractive brownish hue in various different shades.
Shells are among one of the trickiest materials to work with when implemented on timepieces or jewelry due to the nature of the material and measuring a mere 3 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness. Usually witnessed on dials, where the material is safely hidden under the crystal, implementing the material on the case requires extreme delicacy and precision.
