Good to Know:
- Rare cream dial with Roman numerals
- Prototype
- Rare example with white gold rotor
The young independent brand, Grönefeld, over the last decade has established a strong reputation for innovative watches manufactured with a mission to build elegant timepieces with surprising mechanisms.
The 1941 Principia was released in 2018 as their first automatic time-only wristwatch.
The present example in stainless steel features an alluring cream lacquered dial and Roman numerals, as a tribute to the Grönefeld family, which uses the logotype first used by Bart and Tim’s grandfather, Johan Grönefeld, back in 1912 and the ’60’ on the small seconds sub-dial in a subtle shade of orange, as a reference to the Netherlands, the brothers country of birth.
The automatic caliber bearing the same name as the model features exceptional hand finishing, with an extensively hand-decorated 22 karat sold gold full-sized winding rotor – which in this case is white gold and not pink gold as regularly found in the Principa. Rotating on ceramic ball bearings, the rotor’s design prevents wear and eliminates the need for lubrication.
Not only the present Principa is a rare example with cream dial and white gold rotor but it hits new heights of collectability as it is an original prototype.
