Unveiled at Baselworld 2016, the "Center of the Universe Sun" is nothing less than a revolution in thought. For centuries, geocentrism had placed Earth at the center of all things. Then came Nicolaus Copernicus, the Polish astronomer whose groundbreaking theory repositioned the Sun as a fixed point around which the Earth and other planets revolve.
Copernicus spoke of a "24-hour renaissance"—the time it takes for the Earth to rotate on its axis and begin a new day. On the dial of this remarkable wristwatch, Girard-Perregaux gives that renaissance visual form. To achieve this, the manufacture assembled a palette of rare and luminous stones: orange aventurine, grey jade, orange jasper and cornelian. These materials are sculpted, polished, and arranged in a mosaic that recalls the patient artistry of Renaissance intarsia. The final touches come from the hand of a miniature painter, elevating the work from exceptional craftsmanship to genuine artistry.
Housed within a 40mm 18k pink gold case, it is powered by the in-house caliber GP03300-0060 with a 46-hour power reserve. Numbered 0/18, this is the first example made from the series and is further complete with all its accessories.
Girard Perregaux
Swiss | 1791Celebrating its 225th anniversary in 2016, the company earned its fame as the first vertically integrated Swiss watchmaking company, manufacturing high-grade movements, cases and dials within its premises. Particularly noteworthy are the brand's three-gold-bridge tourbillon pocket watches built by Constant Girard beginning in 1867 — considered amongst the most beautiful movement architectures ever made. An active participant in Switzerland's observatory chronometry competitions, the brand won so many precision awards that they were excluded from competing in 1901.
Key models include nineteenth and twentieth century pocket watches with three gold bridges, modern tourbillon wristwatches with three gold bridges, minute repeating pocket and wristwatches, as well as sport watches such as the Laureato and Sea Hawk.
