Released between 2017 and 2018, the Chronomètre Holland & Holland is a limited-edition collaboration between F.P. Journe and the historic British gunmaker Holland & Holland. Conceived as a celebration of heritage, mechanical precision and traditional craftsmanship, the project utilizes steel from two century-old antique shotgun barrels retrieved from Holland & Holland’s museum collection—transforming historic artifacts into haute horlogerie dials.

Both barrels were catalogued in Holland & Holland's original 19th-century ledgers: Barrel No. 1382 (dating to 1868) yielded 38 dials, while Barrel No. 7183 (dating to 1882) produced just 28 dials. The present timepiece features a dial cut from Barrel No. 7183.

The manufacturing process combined traditional gunsmithing with haute horologie. At Holland & Holland’s workshop, the barrel was sliced lengthwise, flattened and rolled into thin strips. These strips were dispatched to Les Cadraniers de Genève—F.P. Journe’s dedicated dial manufacture—where individual dial blanks were cut to specification. The blanks then returned to Holland & Holland for traditional "browning", an archival finishing technique that protects the steel while revealing the natural Damascus pattern of the forged metal. Because no two barrel sections age or pattern identically, every dial produced is entirely unique. Fresh to the auction market and exceptionally well-preserved, this watch is accompanied by its complete set of accessories from 2018, offering an extraordinarily rare opportunity to acquire a stainless steel F.P. Journe.

F.P. Journe

Swiss | 1999

Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.

Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
