Good To Know:
- Ultra-exclusive “Black Label” vertical tourbillon
- Black guilloché pattern paired with white enamel hour dials
- 30-second tourbillon
- Accompanied by its original certificate and box
- 3rd example to appear in auction
Marking the 20th anniversary of the collection in 2019, the manufacture debuted the Vertical Tourbillon at a larger diameter of 42mm.
Representing a complete technical reworking of the tourbillon module, the movement accelerates the cage rotation from the traditional 60 seconds to 30 seconds while orienting the tourbillon cage vertically, perpendicular to the mainplate rather than horizontally. Conceptually, a tourbillon regulator functions by averaging gravity-induced errors on the balance wheel, an effect maximized when the balance remains parallel to the force of gravity. In conventional horizontal arrangements, this requirement is met when the watch rests on its side, but not when laid flat face-up or face-down. By contrast, the vertical orientation maintains optimal efficiency in flat positions, offering consistent chronometric performance during resting states.
Part of the ultra-exclusive "Black Label" series, the present timepiece was available strictly to pre-existing F.P. Journe owners, with individual boutiques receiving only one Black Label watch per month across all models. Its semi-gloss black dial serves as an immediate signifier of its elite status to Journe cognoscenti, providing a striking contrast against the hand-crafted white enamel sub-dials.
Fresh-to-the-market, the present watch is the third example to ever appear in auctions and offered in overall excellent condition. Complete with its original accessories, this rare, limited-access iteration represents a prized trophy for the serious F.P. Journe collector.

F.P. Journe
Swiss | 1999Founded by watchmaker François-Paul Journe in 1999, the F.P. Journe brand is relatively young, but already is as highly regarded by collectors as many distinguished manufacturers with centuries-old heritage. In the minds of the world's savviest collectors, Journe is producing some of the finest wristwatches the market has ever seen. Mastering his craft from restoring historical timepieces, he was the first to create a wristwatch incorporating two escapements that benefit from the phenomenon of resonance — the Chronomètre à Résonance.
Key models include the Résonance, tourbillon wristwatches incorporating a remontoir and the limited edition Vagabondage series. Especially sought-after are his earliest "souscription" watches, made in 1999.
